Euro President confirms independent Scotland would face challenge to re-enter EU

At a meeting of the European Parliament’s European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) Group yesterday (Tuesday 18 February) afternoon in Brussels, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy confirmed the view of European Commission President José Manuel Barroso that he expressed to Andrew Marr this past Sunday where he cast considerable doubt on the ability of Scotland to regain its membership of the European Union in the event of independence.

Scottish Conservative Euro MP and longtime animal welfare campaigner Struan Stevenson has hit out against the “breath-taking” hypocrisy of Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying that while the strongman portrays himself as an animal lover, he is turning a blind eye to a brutal cull of thousands of stray dogs in Sochi on the eve of the Winter Olympics.

Senior Euro MP attacks ‘genocidal campaign’ of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki

The Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has today been accused of a genocidal campaign against the Sunni population by senior Euro MP Struan Stevenson.  

Mr Stevenson, a Scottish Conservative MEP and Chair of the powerful Delegation for Relations with Iraq, said that the massive Iraqi military assault on Fallujah and Ramadi in al-Anbar Province is the latest phase in Nouri al-Maliki's campaign to eliminate all opposition to his regime prior to the elections on 30th April.

A Bee in the Bonnet

The European Parliament in Strasbourg is buzzing with excitement this week over a major challenge to a ruling by judges in the Court of Justice. In 2011 Europe's highest court ruled that pollen is an ingredient of honey, in direct contradiction to all understanding and practices in the sector. The judge's decision will cost EU honey producers an estimated £2.7 million in re-labelling jars of honey to indicate that they contain pollen, potentially undermining consumer confidence in honey.
