Glasgow deserves to win green prize

The following article appeared in Parliament Magazine on 24 June 2013.

I was delighted to see earlier this year that Glasgow had been shortlisted for the 2015 European Green Capital award. Though the other nominated cities – Bristol, Brussels and Ljubljana – are all worthy contenders for this distinction, Glasgow’s reinvention from industrial powerhouse to leader in green innovation puts it head and shoulders above the rest.

Speech to the NCRI Grand Rally in Villepinte, France

Struan delivered the following speech to the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) Grand Rally in Villepinte, France, outside Paris, on Saturday 22 June 2013.

I am often asked - “What is it like, as a politician, to stand on a stage in front of 100,000 people and make a speech? Are you not scared, are you not nervous?” My answer is always the same, “Why should I be scared or nervous? You are my friends, my family, my brothers and my sisters.”

Scots MEP to hit out against the ‘supreme folly’ of SNP green energy targets

Christian Oppression in Iraq

Struan delivered the following speech during a joint debate on human rights, democracy, freedom of the press and media in the world in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on 12 June.

The persecution and oppression of religious minorities in Iraq should give us all great cause for concern. The on-going bloody conflict between the Shias and the Sunnis continues to attract the world's attention, while the systematic obliteration of many of the ethnic religious groups goes on virtually without notice.

Stevenson welcomes a better balance on cod stocks

Conservative Fisheries spokesman Struan Stevenson today welcomed a new package of measures designed to address the delicate balance between the recovery of cod stocks and the livelihoods of fishing communities.

As the European Parliament approved two reports aimed at getting the EU’s cod programme back on track, Mr Stevenson said:

“The old plan was delivering the worst of both worlds - no good for cod stocks and no good for fishermen. This readjustment should help to inject some common sense into the management of cod stocks which have begun to make a strong recovery.”
