Tory Euro MP Rallies Behind Cameron

Struan Stevenson, Scottish Conservative MEP has expressed his support for David Cameron’s EU policy, arguing it will put the UK back in the driving-seat of EU politics. Mr. Stevenson was speaking at the East Lothian Tories Annual Dinner.

Mr. Stevenson’s comments follow David Cameron’s announcement that a new Conservative administration at Westminster will propose a Sovereignty Bill re-asserting the pre-eminence of Westminster over Brussels. The Bill would even seek to claw back sovereignty in key areas such as the Social Chapter.

Mr. Stevenson had previously suggested to William Hague and David Cameron that they could legally challenge the right of the EU institutions to take precedence over decisions taken in our parliament and in our courts.

Mr. Stevenson commented:

“This mirrors similar action already taken by the German Bundestag following a ruling by Germany’s highest Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe. It throws the weight of our legal establishment behind the primary need to define the ultimate sovereignty of our parliament over that of the EU institutions.”

Mr. Stevenson went on to rebuff the French Finance Minister’s recent comments that Britain's main opposition party's EU policies were pathetic and autistic and attacked those who have said Britain cannot claw back aspects of the Social Chapter, such as the working-time directive

“The fact that a French Minister has attacked David Cameron’s EU policies in such virulent terms simply proves that he must be doing something right!

“Britain is one of the biggest contributors to the EU budget. I am confident David Cameron will be able to re-negotiate the UK opt-out from the working time directive and other harmful bits of socialist dogma.”
