Time Brown let Britain vote on EU Membership

Dear Sir,

An EU summit deal on Friday has cleared the way for another Irish referendum on the Lisbon Treaty (Constitution).

This follows a similar vote last June, where Ireland clearly voted ‘no’ to the treaty.

Ireland may be due to have a second vote on the Lisbon Treaty but here in Britain, Gordon Brown has made no hint as to when our promised referendum will take place.

The Constitution will have a resounding impact on our lives. So much so, that both Labour and the Liberal Democrats made it clear, they would allow us the opportunity to vote on the treaty.

Why then are we still waiting for the Prime Minister to announce the referendum?

The simple answer is he is scared. He is scared that the British people, the majority of whom have lost all faith in their leader, will see this vote as the final vote of no confidence in him and his government.

Labour have already lost the European elections, there is an ongoing power struggle within the Labour Party and recent polls suggest that Labour could expect to lose more than 150 to 200 seats if a general election was called.

Yet a promise is a promise. Isn’t it about time for the British people to have their say?

Yours faithfully,

Struan Stevenson
Scottish Conservative MEP
