Scots Tory MEP visits local seafood processing factory
Scottish Conservative MEP, Struan Stevenson visited Dawnfresh Seafoods Ltd, the UK’s leading seafood company on Friday (6th March 2009).
Mr Stevenson visited the Uddingston processing plant to meet with its Chairman, Alastair Salvesen and Managing Director, Steve Flack to discuss the fishing industry and aquaculture and current issues facing the Scottish seafood processing industry. He was joined by Euro MP Candidate, Belinda Don.
Speaking following his visit, Struan Stevenson said:
"In my ten years as an MEP and as a member of the Fisheries Committee of the European Parliament, I have visited many fish processors and factories around the world. However, Dawnfresh Seafoods is the most impressive I've ever seen.
“The company seems to combine new technology with cutting-edge product innovation and a focus on quality. They have a loyal workforce of over 600 employees and a low turnover of staff and they are now the largest non-salmon fish farmers in Scotland, with widespread interests in trout and mussel production.
“I was astonished to hear about their development of a 3.5 kilo fast-growing, large loch trout and I saw for myself the superb filets being produced from this fabulous creature.
“Such advances in fish farming techniques will help to put Scotland once again at the forefront of the European and international aquaculture industry. I was also shown their scampi tail and fish cake production lines and their added value unit, where mouth-watering sauces and herbs are added to ready-to-cook trout dishes.
“At a time of deepening economic recession, it is uplifting to find a major Scottish company with such a forward looking policy and positive attitude towards the future."
