Scots Tory MEP goes back to school

Scots Tory MEP, Struan Stevenson, visited Calside Primary School earlier today (Friday 27th November) to talk to primary six pupils about the European Parliament and his role as an MEP.

Mr Stevenson spoke to the 9 year-olds about the European Union, the workings of the Parliament and what last week’s appointment of the European President means for Europe and to Britain.

Mr Stevenson also took along figurines made out of cat and dog fur which were used to help win his nine year campaign for an EU-wide ban on the barbaric trade in cat and dog skins. He talked about the campaign which involved support from celebrities, the public and politicians.

In addition he discussed another issue close to his heart; Kazakhstan. Over the last ten years, Struan has campaigned vigorously to expose the legacy of Soviet nuclear tests and to raise cash for the men, women and children affected.

Speaking after today's visit, Struan Stevenson said:

“I thoroughly enjoyed Friday’s visit as I always enjoy explaining about the workings of the European Union, my role as an MEP and some of the campaigns I have been involved in.

“Europe has also been making the headlines in recent weeks, so I also talked a little about the Lisbon Treaty, the appointment of our new President and the upcoming Copenhagen Climate Change summit.

“In addition, I got the opportunity to speak about some of the campaigns I have recently been working on, such as the ban on cat and dog fur, which came into effect on 1st January 2009."
