MEP calls for scrapping of bendy fruit rules
Scots Tory MEP Struan Stevenson has today called for the scrapping of all EU rules about the shape of fruit and vegetables for sale on our supermarket shelves. Mr Stevenson said it was daft to scrap 26 rules, and keep in place ten others.
He explained:
“Although the EU is going in the right direction by scrapping 26 rules, it is still bureaucracy gone mad to keep in place another 10 rules that mean you have to sell misshapen fruits in a separate section of the supermarket.
“This simply exposes the stupidity of the regulations, Consumers should be allowed to choose the fruit and vegetables they want, and the price should reflect this choice.
“When large parts of the world don’t have enough to eat, it is obscene that perfectly good food is going to waste due to daft regulations.”
