Man tipped to be EU President told - ‘no Euro taxes’

Scottish Conservative MEP, Struan Stevenson has warned Herman Van Rompuy, the front runner to become Europe’s President, not to hijack the climate change agenda with green taxes.

Addressing the Confederation of European Pulp and Paper Industries conference in Brussels, Scottish Conservative MEP Struan Stevenson warned Herman Van Rompuy, the current Prime Minister of Belgium, not to regard climate change as a cash cow.

Mr Stevenson was reacting to comments made by Prime Minister Van Rompuy at a meeting of the secretive Bilderberg Group on Monday.

Struan Stevenson said:

"We must not allow the climate change debate to be hijacked by greedy politicians to meet their own, separate policy objectives.

“Herman Van Rompuy’s comments for Europe to set green taxes to fund the rising cost of Brussels and the welfare state, is a step too far. We don't want Euro taxes and we certainly don't want taxes on climate change. These ideas are unwelcome and would be catastrophic to our public campaign to control climate change.”
