ID cards for sheep
Commenting on a report in yesterday’s Scotsman regarding a new EU electronic identification scheme for sheep, Scottish MEP Struan Stevenson said:
“This new electronic tagging scheme for sheep will put a real burden on Scottish sheep farmers.
“There have been some problems in the past with the existing ”batch system” and I am keen to see a re-examination of these issues, with other options being considered, before Scottish farmers have EID foisted upon their sheep.
“I will be meeting with Scottish sheep farmers when they come to Brussels (October 6th) to give them my support. We need to ensure that any failings in the existing scheme are rectified so that the cost, time and inconvenience of electronically tagging, scanning and monitoring sheep does not unfairly discriminate against Scottish sheep farmers and producers.”
