Scotland will be instrumental in achieving the European Parliament’s Climate Change targets
Even in the depths of an economic recession, climate change remains high on the political agenda across the world. The role of Scotland will be instrumental in achieving the European Parliament’s Climate and Energy Package targets by 2020 which includes a 20% share for renewables in the EU energy mix.
The Scottish Conservative Party believes that the future of renewable energy is about encouraging everyone to play a part. By encouraging small providers, including homes, schools and businesses, to produce energy for their own use, we can make a difference to climate change in Scotland.
But thought must be given to the wider implications of constructing new and renewable energy sources, such as wind farms. The construction of giant wind turbines on sensitive upland habitats and particularly on peatland in Scotland damages the environment, has a negative impact on ecosystem services and adds to global warming. We need to protect all of our deep peatland, not destroy it.
