On 29 January, Struan chaired a meeting of the parliament's Delegation for Relations with Iraq examining women's rights in the country.
On Tuesday 28 January, the Parliament's Intergroup on Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development, chaired by Struan, hosted a conference called 'Water and Energy as Instruments for Peace'. Its purpose was to discuss how mutually fair and advantageous cooperation on water issues could aid in the peaceable economic and strategic development of nations in the Central Asian region.
From 25 October to 5 November, as Vice President of the European Parliament's Fisheries Committee, Struan travelled throughout Laos and Vietnam, at the invitation of these governments, to examine their prospects for aquaculture.
Struan has written a report on the visit to Iraq he conducted as Chair of the European Parliament's Delegation for Relations with Iraq at the end of November 2013.
During the past few months accounts of arbitrary arrests, constant executions, and torture of prisoners – particularly the torture and rape of female detainees – have increased exponentially. Simultaneously there has been a marked increase in pressure and crackdowns on various sectors of Iraqi society by the police and security services. A series of protest rallies against Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki, which had decreased after the crackdown on demonstrations last year, have now been reignited.
Struan Stevenson has authored a report on behalf of the Euorpean Parliament Friends of Free Iran Intergroup summarising key points made in a recent review of Iran's Ministry of Intelligence produced by The Pentagon and The Library of Congress in the United States.
